Cystine B6: Precursor to Glutathione

Cystine B6 (N-Acetyl L-Cysteine or NAC) is an amino acid precursor to glutathione (GSH). Cystine B6 is a critical antioxidant. NAC or Cystine B6 is more bio-available than glutathione. Glutathione consists of three amino acids: cysteine, glutamic acid and glycine. The body breaks this tripeptide apart before absorption, but the most valuable amino acid for making glutathione is the Cystine B6. Cystine B6 is the precursor to glutathione. This means it needs to be present for your body to manufacturer glutathione. Just taking glutathione directly is NOT the correct way to increase your body’s level of glutathione, you need to take the precursor to glutathione, namely Cystine B6 (NAC).

Prevents Flu (Influenza) and Improves Respiratory Symptoms

Cystine B6 (NAC) has been used for decades as a mucolytic to treat bronchopulmonary diseases including cystic fibrosis, chronic bronchitis, sinusitis, asthma, and some pneumonias. Cystine B6 (NAC) can reduce the thickness of your mucus so it may be easily coughed up. Recently, studies have supported taking Cystine B6  to prevent influenza and some flu-like symptoms.  Recommended Cystine B6, NAC dosage was 600mg twice a day.

Heart Disease

Lp(a) levels are an indicator of heart disease. Lp(a) is more reliable than blood cholesterol levels, low density lipoprotein (HDL) levels, or the ratio of LDL to HDL. But, diets and drugs designed to lower blood cholesterol do not lower Lp(a) levels. The most reliable nutrient to lower Lp(a) is Cystine B6 (NAC).  Cystine B6 reduced Lp(a) levels by 70%. Cystine B6 breaks up the disulfide bonds by converting each disulfide group into two sulphydryl groups.

Cystine B6 inhibits heart damage by preventing oxidation of LDL, by lowering plasma homocysteine levels, and by reducing effects of free-radicals. Cystine B6 protects against ischaemic and reperfusion damage. Cystine B6 also enhances the coronary dilating and anti-platelet effects of nitroglycerine.  Finally, ST-depression, sign of myocardial ischaemia, was not seen following pretreatment with Cystine B6, suggesting attenuation of impaired tissue oxygenation and preservation of myocardial performance by Cystine B6.

Sulphydryl groups protect against toxins. SH groups react directly with many poisons – including herbicides, drugs (acetaminophen), environmental pollutants (carbon tetrachloride, microorganisms like E. coli & aflatoxin), and heavy metals (lead, mercury, arsenic). Cystine B6 helps detoxification by producing optimal amounts of GSH making harmful compounds less toxic.

Immunity and AIDS

Cystine B6 improves immunity via intracellular GSH production when normal GSH production is impaired (ie. HIV). Research has shown that reduced intracellular GSH is the “direct and early consequence of retroviral infection”. Intracellular GSH has a powerful influence on how well T- and B-lymphocyte cells function and the production of phagocytes (macrophages, monocytes and neutrophils). Cystine B6, NAC has been shown to block the AIDS virus production in-vitro.
